Minnesota checking in...

It is getting close to Quilt Show Season in Minnesota – our guild’s show is scheduled for March 23 and 24 in New Ulm. If any of you are within driving distance, please consider coming~ Karen McTavish will be at the show both days doing a lecture and book signing, we have incredible door prizes - the person in charge of that part of the show is amazing! We will have great food, guild displays with our community projects like Quilts of Valor, Snuggle Quilts for babies in need, a Stitch of Hope Quilts that we are making for the Oncology unit at our local hospital, a gorgeous opportunity quilt, vendors, demos from vendors and guild members… Oh, and lots and lots of quilts on display. Our guild even has a website now (work in progress!) that you can check www.prairiepiecemakersquiltsnewulmmn.org. As we get the demo schedule set, that info will be added to the website.

It is also quilt retreat time...Our guild has two each year at a wonderful site less than 20 minutes from my house. It is run by Catholic sisters (Schoenstadt), they make homemade breads and soups, etc., the building is on a lake with sleeping accomodations for lots of people. There were so many signed up for the Feb. retreat that we have had to split it into two groups, with each group staying for two days and one night. We are all getting things finished for the quilt show! I know I will be doing a binding marathon over the next several weeks. Another retreat with a group of friends is scheduled for early March - this will be the fifth year that we have gotten together and it is always fun. That one is three days and two nights and some 0f us sew into the wee hours of the morning.

Any other shows coming up? Joleen in MN

Travel show on N. Z.

Was feeling down and out yesterday due to weather front and too much garlic the night before. . . .so lay about on the couch and watched TV. There was an interesting show on walking N.Z. Although I dozed off and on the person took a boat across a long lake, hiked a one way hike across a trail through a tropical rain forest type of country, 4 days in all. Beautiful waterfalls. He had a guide on the top of the mountain. I believe the pass was discovered by a Scotsman who later drowned in the lake. Made me want to hop a plane and go down under.
But, going to hop a car and go over to the beach for a few hours. Our friends from Boca Raton have found a house here to buy and put in an offer. They have a contract on their Boca house and the closing should be in March. We are going to have wine and cheese on the balcony about 5PM.
The weather has been unseasonably warm.

"Made in China"

OK, going to vent here. Is everything that one wants to buy "Made in China"? I'm talking things from bedspreads, towels, to floor tiles, dishes, flatware.
I have to hunt and hunt to find things made in Portugal, Mexico, Canada, USA, and other places. Was told by one sales person in a furniture store that it was cheaper to have the furniture designed, sent on a ship to china, made, then shipped back, than to make it here. (This was Paula Dean furniture) It is so frustrating.
I did find some soap dishes made in India the other day, and soap from Scotland--go figure.
OK, enough venting.
