This is called Electronic Intrusion. My artist's statement, which is always difficult to limit words in juried submissions is:

Cell phones are both a blessing and a curse. This quilt, while addressing
the subject in a somewhat playful manner, speaks to the improper use of
electronic devices. The portrayal of the pre-Columbian festival
Mexican-Day-of-the-Dead with a sugar-masked corpse hanging from a cross of
cellphones and tiny cadavers dancing mischievously amongst brightly coloured
marigolds, Flowers-of-the-Dead decorating cemeteries at festival time, is a
reminder that distracted driving can end in tragedy.

This image came to mind following several tragic accidents here in the country where I live, an hour north of Toronto. It was accepted by the Mancuso World Quilt Competition in 2015 and travelled across the United States. I cut up my wedding dress for the corpse. What better use for it than to put it into a quilt.

I would like to thank Eric and Sue for providing this site for us for so many years. And for so many years this site brought a lot of friendships together across both countries, the US & Canada and well beyond North America. That spammers took over the public board forced this site into a private site which some unfortunately could not access for some reason or other, all cyber/computer related. As FaceBook appears to have taken over a site like this, something I don't use myself but which I understand many do, I would like to say, again, thanks to the hosts, you've provided a beautiful site here that few have taken advantage of since it went private. This site provided the connection for Rosey's Retreat here in 2004 which many may remember, it provided laughter and support for those going through medical issues which some did. This site was a wonderful home to many, in its time.

Perhaps a corpse may be a fitting closure to the postings here,

This is Doris. This is Doris on a "zip line"??? What is a zip line? I can see her hanging in mid-air like a monkey. Looks like you've gotten relief from the heat. The weather here is glorious.
Pic of me on zip line course. Eight runs down the mountain. Lots of fun but
I'm a bit sore today. I am not 50 years old anymore. LOL. We wish we had time to
do it again. :-)
DH and I are enjoying the glorious weather on our vacation in Northern Michigan.
It is a big improvement over the heat and humidity back home! We are playing
golf, will visit Mackinac Island tomorrow, and yesterday we rode the Zip Lines
at the place where we are staying this week. At our age! LOL. It was a blast,
and even though we have some sore muscles, we would do it again.

Hugs to

Well, since I'm about the only one posting here, I'll put a thought up here that some may read, those who haven't gone over to FaceBook. This afternoon I was at our local fresh vegetable market about 15 minutes south of here, in the country. I go there at this time of year 'specially for their fresh peas, which I love but which I parse out into salads as a meal of them would make them all disappear. I have two rules about choosing my peas...one, they must not be empty pods, I'm not paying for empty pods, and I like my peas hard. So, as I am pawing through the peas, up comes another woman with the same intent, she likes hard peas and won't pay for empty pods. We got talking, I told her she looked very much like one of my former colour theory teachers at the Ontario College of Art, who unfortunately, I believe may have passed away, not sure about that. She told me she was an artist. A potter, she said. I told her of the time I was in London and saw what a difference there was between the Chinese porcelain that the Victoria & Albert had and the Delft blue and white porcelain. She explained the difference why. The lower plate is Chinese, the upper plate is Dutch. Then she explained how she made her pottery much the same as the Chinese porcelain and why hers cost what it did. All this over picking peas. And pods.

Although the Delftware potters preferred to call their pottery “porcelain”, it was only a cheaper version of the real Chinese porcelain. Delft Blue was not made from the typical porcelain clay, but from clay that was coated with a tin glaze after it was fired

I'm not a potter but I could spot the refinement in the Chinese pottery right away at the museum.

So, that's the lesson for today,

Well, I may be posting for my own amusement here so I took the opportunity to place three photos on the page, as no-one else is posting here and at some point I wonder if the site will simply disappear from view.
Yesterday, Wit's End Horse Trials happened again in our area. It may be one more year that it will run, I'm told and then the two people who own the farm property and run this event, may retire it. It's a huge amount of work. They've run this event with FEI Status, had many participants and spectators, I met Bo Derek at one of them, she came and sat down beside the jump I was a judge at...I told her I was reading her book she'd written and her comment was sweet and humorous..."poor you"...actually it's a nice book to read. She bought a pair of high purple Wellingtons...as did I. I eventually gave mine away, I don't have a boot jack to pull them off. Bo is a beautiful woman, still. The land at Wit's End is one of the most magnificent pieces of property here on the Niagara Escarpment for Cross-Country Eventing, up and down, you have to be a mountain goat to navigate the land. As I am getting older and have volunteered there in different capacities, my favorite place of all time is out on the X-Country course as a jump judge. This means, we have a walkie/talkie, a clip board, and note, if there is a clean jump, a runout, a fall, horse or rider, and so on. It's not an onerous job and one that if it's not raining involves being out on the top of a hill or in the valley, watching magnificent and athletic animals and riders race across the fields and taking the interesting jumps and difficult ones at that. I've yet to witness a horse falling and I think this is one thing I know I would not cope with well. It's one thing for a rider to come off and often they do, but a horse down is not something I ever want to see. Yesterday the weather was gorgeous, big fat clouds scudding across the sky, the wind blowing to the point of almost knocking me off balance, eating my picnic lunch out in the field, feeling free, the wind in my face. There is nothing I can think of better than this...feeling free, away from the claustrophobic happenings of life.
You know my thoughts on FB...Having joined, I am now tempted to leave....It doesn't provide the same level of exchange as this board. Maybe, even if it's just you and I who keep it going here, others will drift back too...?

We are off to the UK next Monday. An interesting time to go, after the shock waves caused by the Brexit vote. I don't even know which way my family over there voted , but I'm sure we'll find out soon after our arrival ! What now I wonder ? Chaos and confusion for awhile I expect. I had some sterling over there and had planned to transfer it to NZ....might wait awhile now, in the hope that the pound will recover slightly...

Crazy weather here in NZ,, as in the rest of the world. Hottest summer on record , very mild autumn , followed by a mild (so far) winter. Nice for some but the ski fields are doing it hard, as there is very little snow around. We need a few more heavy frosts to kill off the bugs, there have been some nasty coughs and colds around . I am hoping to shake mine off before setting off on that long journey...11hrs to HK then 12 hrs to UK..and those are just the long flights...

We have an elderly friend coming to live in the house while we are away. He will look after our dog ,so that suits us well. He says he is looking forward to four weeks in the country, so I hope it works out well for him.. We have never done this before but the DH thought it a wise move this time around...

Somebody was asking after TerTer on FB. I was sorry to hear that she is not at all well, Somebody on FB is in touch with her and passed on our best wishes. She was an almost daily contributor to the original WWQP. so we got to "know" her quite well.. Time eh ? It waits for no one...

If you are reading this and haven't posted for awhile, drop us a line !
I'd thought not to post again here, as I seem to be one of the few doing so and yet, my decision, because I'm fighting a loosing battle with the digital media anyway, to post here continues. I don't want to hog the board. I wish more people hadn't gone over to FaceBook, not that it isn't an enjoyable place for quilters and people to be but why, I wonder, cut this Chat Board off. I do understand that contacting the webmaster seems a useless waste of time, that some people have been able to sign into the Chat Board in order to post, some can read, but not post, and all of this I find discouraging. Why is the webmaster who hosts this site not available to those wanting or having wanted to get in the site? What is it about the site that makes it difficult for some to access? And then, why can't people post to both places, FaceBook and the Chat Board. My own reasons for not 'doing' Facebook are not publishable, I'll be run off 'social' media forever...(smiling). The computer takes up more of my time than I wish to allow now, I know that getting into FaceBook would take me away even further from my creative work in the studio, reading about other people's lives on FaceBook. Maybe when my hands get so crippled up I can't sew, maybe when my eyesight no longer allows for threading a needle, maybe then...FaceBook will be a good thing. Right now, for me, it is not. Too, this business of 'friending' thus allowing people access to read your FaceBook page, bothers me. I understand it is a form of control for privacy but it also is a form of control for hurting people, not with the quilters but with others whose lives are elsewhere on the internet, where people in families unfriend and block other family members from reading their FaceBook page. I'd better not go on about this, but to say, I wish more people would post here, put a picture up here, have some dialogue here, it's been fun, it could still be fun.

So, the sketch above is done by our friend, D. Cooper, an architecture technologist by training, an artist by his own gifts. Truly an artist, Don very kindly did this drawing of our hen house, which is minus the chickens now. I wish I still had them but one day I couldn't face cleaning out the hen house over the coming winter and packed them on their way to another farm in the area. Himself had my two fenced in runs and all the fenced rooms taken down inside and outside the hen house within 24 hours. Without asking me. I think that would remain grounds for divorce if I had done that to him. He will go to his grave with that misdemeanor hanging over his head of which he would not pay attention to anyway. Rolls like water off a duck's back, it does. So, now I buy my eggs at a farm nearby, which I'm about to do now, after I deliver B&B guests from Australia to their family gathering across the country road from my egg lady.
And so life goes on. Wish more people posted here and I wish the webmaster was more present and available.
RoseyP in S.Ontario,CanadaRoseyPhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10277785707806473280noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5908232368106516157.post-76298834451261798182016-06-11T18:12:00.005-05:002016-06-11T18:12:56.940-05:00From MaryJoG.

I taught a class about making a quilt from a memory (using a simple sketch) or
photo demonstrating with this piece. It began with a sketch that was enlarged to
18" by 24" to make a pattern. Fabric choice is most important. I've collected
fabrics of many kinds over the years to use in landscape quilts. Most are
cottons but sometimes a silk or leather will fit perfectly. The grass is a
piece of cloth embellished with machine embroidery. I do some thread painting
and am learning to do more. The quilt was embellished, embroidered and quilted
in one step. Fabric was placed on batting and then stitched and embellished.
Sometimes I use 505 basting spray but usually use hem tape to secure pieces. It
is a narrow iron on fusible. A tiny bit will hold a piece down until it is
stitched. I decided to mount this piece on canvas and framed it. My original
sketch didn't have anything on the beach but it needed color, hence the chairs
and sandcastle.

Blessings,
Fran has been my life saver..if I have a problem it is easy to contact her and she seems to be able to set me straight very easily ! It's easy to be swamped with information but it is possible to block it ,when you know how :)

We have had unseasonably warm weather here, since February . Temperatures are nearly ten degrees higher than normal. Nice for those whose lives don't depend on the land but disastrous for those who do..
No takers for our property yet ! We love it here so its not a problem to stay, but it is a surprise that nobody else seems to want it ! We are planning to be away in July for the month, so we don't want anything to complicate that, When we come back we'll tidy the place up for another try in the spring (Sept)

DGC in the UK all have important exams this week., poor things.. I hated exams when I was at school.. The eldest is completing his second year at University, the next one his "A" levels at school and the youngest his last year at primary school... How quickly the years have gone by. Two of the NZ grandchildren are at University now too, and one still at school. We watched our DGS play Rugby for his Uni at the weekend, It was a good game and his team won !

Better get out in the garden for a autumn tidy- up, before the rain comes and wets all of the fallen leaves...
Life is busy with two grandsons graduating
college this weekend. Austin will have a degree in mass communication. He'd
like to continue living here and is looking for a job in video production. His
brother, Nate, has earned a master's in education and is seeking a music
teaching job. The house will be full with the first of family arriving this
afternoon. Three grandsons came here for college and stayed which is why we
moved here ten years ago.

Am just back from my quilt group's retreat in Cascade. I'm half finished
with handwork on a New York Beauty for my bed. I also cut strips and blocks
for a yellow quilt for the guest room. This is the first yellow quilt I've made
in about 150 over the past twenty years. The parent fabric is Kaffe Fasset,
also a first. His line is usually too busy. Our group of six did an amazing
amount of quilting in 4 days. Each had individual projects plus two group
Quilts of Valor. We did some serious shopping in McCall's two quilt shops
yesterday. Fabric for a pale gray and pastel modern quilt followed me
home.

Son Jeffry painted the doors dark teal which goes well with the pale
sage exterior .He and the grandsons painted the house last summer. I'm
debating about remodeling the kitchen this summer. The bar area is two levels
which may become one for more counter space. The hickory cabinets are turning
yellow from varnish; would like them dark. Am not a fan of white cupboards but
am considering those, too. Appliances are white with stainless trim. The floor
is pecan. Will get some estimates to help decide. Any suggestions?

The yard is planted and starting to shape up. Have eliminated 30 pots
and four flower beds in the past two years. Lilies fill one, a lilac is in
another, a butterfly bush and a snowball complete them. The four are barked and
have weed matt. One is now a veggie garden. That leaves me three to weed and
hand water. When John was alive, seven was fine. Too many for one person to
handle. I love to work outside but need stitching time, too.

Perhaps I've turned a corner in grief. Two years have passed. My grief
group likened death of a spouse to a tsunami the first year. The second is
spent treading deep water. I'm now beginning year three and am finally on the
beach.

Blessings,

I've caught the recent discussion about cookies and this chat board. It is *not* private. Anyone can "Google" and if they have the right search terms, can find this and read it. I just now did on the Chrome browser from which I have never signed in here, so no prior cookies.

Sondra signed me up on the Facebook group but I've stopped all email notices due to the flurry of activity. It was clogging up my in box, and I'll get over there and visit when I have some time. It is nice to see some names I recognize, and some I don't because their screen names on WWQP were different. ;-)
I hope the moderators of the Facebook group are careful about who they let join, otherwise anyone could become a member of the group.

No big news here, except our NHL team has game #4 at home tonight, of the second level playoff series, and we will be at that game. We hope our team wins!

DGD is completely into the movie "Frozen" right now. I found a nice cotton fabric at JoAnn's and serged up some dinner napkins for her. She is just now old enough to want a napkin to wipe her mouth. It's just too cute! LOL

Take care and hugs to everyone!
There was a time when cookies were something we ate. However, as I understand this, cookies aside, this is a Private forum is it not? Not that it matters, it seems my experience as a much younger person in a certain situation which fortunately I did not find myself in but it was reported that I was in, which my parents were and I was imminently thankful that I wasn't in has led me to be cautious about my personal life...so, I'm not to be trusted through my own ignorance of the internet and in posting to it and that cookies can attach to words that may have adverse effects on the site. I hope I haven't caused any problems here. But I will state I do believe anything can be hacked, even FaceBook and Private Websites and banks and governments and whatever. I feel nothing is sacred in the cyberworld if someone wants to hack in, attach to, whatever or find information out about whomever, it can happen. I've lived too long in a trusting world, I'm not smart to the ways of the internet...which is why I need to stay off it....(smile)
Facebook is not everybody's favourite social media but it is fast and accessible and easy to use and a closed group is pretty safe. I manage a page for my feral cat rescue and am a member on a number of others and have never had a problem.
We (DH and I) are doing well at the beach in Fla. Very windy, a Nor'Easter for the last 4 days, but not very much rain. Just 25 MPH winds, etc.
Little dog has come back from the last failed adoption. We will not do this to her, or us, again. I'll just have to get up early, put on jeans, and take her out early each morning.

Still working on my sand pail quilt. I bought the Hobbs 80-20 king size batt from Hobby Lobby that was recommended here. I have about 55-60 of the blocks done.

DH and I will celebrate our 38th Anniversary this Thursday. Woo-Hoo! We are going up to Savannah, GA. for a few days. Not staying at a B & B this time, and will have to board the dogs, but hope to have lots of fun, ride our bikes, play tourist. The weather looks like it will be good.

Going to watch "Call the Midwife" now.
Everything started on Sunday when I heard her yelp....I was in the other room so assumed she caught a toenail or pulled a muscle chasing Lady. However, she did not eat her supper and had a hard time jumping up on the sofa. It is not like her to turn down food. On Monday morning she would not eat any breakfast so about 9AM I loaded her in the car and off we went to the Vet. $215.00 and 3 hours later, she was diagnosed with pancreatitis. She was 2 shots after being x-rayed and having her blood tested. I was instructed to bring her back the next morning for a follow up. Which I did. At that visit she was given a 2nd shot, plus a prescription for antibiotics for 7 days, intravenous fluids, and a special canned food that she could have a little bit every 2 hours until the food was gone. She is to have small meals several times a day for at least a week. The 2nd visit was only $59.00. At this rate I am going to have to get a part time job to pay her medical bills. The vet said this could be a one time thing or it could happen again. Trying to post a photo....Bella is the one that looks like a yellow Lab.
Hi, I've been out of touch for some time now. Just the basic housekeeping, etc, and trying and failing to find a good home for 1 dog. We have had 3 failed adoptions with her, so I guess we will give up. Sigh here. . . She is a sweet dog, but needs a yard to run in, which we do not have. I am not always able to take her to the beach to run and play, and am afraid to let her off the leash, #1 against the law, $50.00 fine, and 2-she could run off & get hit by a car. She is not happy here, I'm not happy taking her out to pee at 6:30AM either.
Attempting to do a king size quilt, liberated quiltimaking II, by Gwen Marston. An older book, but making sand pails instead of Easter baskets. I've been collecting beach type fabric for 3 years, and it's time to use some of the stash.
I'd post a picture, but "I-Cloud" doesn't want to be agreeable most days, so just imagine various sand pails of different prints, with assorted sand colors as background. 10 per row, I'm guessing 10 rows.
(Rosey- 70degerees here today, sunny. I know in August I'll be complaining about the 95 degree heat, but the last few days have been lovely.)

So,, who has used 118" or 120" fabric for a king size back? Did you order it on line somewhere, or buy it from a local quilt store?
I have called around to a few long-arm quilters, and found one who isn't too much money, with a good reputation for beautiful work. I had bought 118" muslin from Jo-Ann's but this long-arm person doesn't want me to use a solid. She said solids show the stitching too much. (!) ACK!
Don't have enough yardage to do a good job of piecing anything, --what to do?
I'm looking for a thin batting also, something for the summer, maybe an 80% cotton, 20% polly. any suggestions for brands? I've been told Quilter's Dream , but no one seems to carry it here in Jacksonville, Fla. and would have to have it special ordered.
Other than quilt stuff, doing OK, fingers a bit swollen, but on an Anti-Inflammation eating plan, which seems to do well when I stick to it.
This is the Y2K+13 I made with the squares I collected a few years back, This is the top before I had it quilted -- a huge 120 by 120 king size. So many thanks to all who donated squares! This is a simple throw size quilt I finished this past week. started it last spring. all scraps left over from previous projects. I had it machine quilted. The picture quality isn't the best, but you get the idea.
Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17493758803682544567noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5908232368106516157.post-22807185032396140262016-02-15T14:33:00.001-05:002016-02-15T14:33:37.650-05:00And one for me !

Marion in NZ.http://www.blogger.com/profile/13758023026823345797noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5908232368106516157.post-73917492093519920392016-02-15T14:27:00.004-05:002016-02-15T14:27:46.230-05:00Beautiful quilts...Thank you for posting the photos of the quilts, they are both beautiful. Rosey, I was so interested in all you had to say about your father and his yearly adventures into the Artic.. Sorry about the sleeping bag though...and your nasty fall. You'll be very stiff today. I hope you can take it quietly..

I haven't done any quilting for awhile but I do like to have small projects on the go. I have made over- sized pincushion/needle case type things for the two grand-daughters... One off to University a long way from home, and one off flatting for the first time. I will see if I can post photos of them. They were fun to make.
Certainly just as lacking in colour but a very different shade of grey... you were dark, I was fair, that could be the difference..
..
Feeling a bit unsettled today as we had a very sharp earthquake this afternoon. It's five years this week since we had the one that took lives and flattened our, once lovely, city... As far as I have heard ,this one hasn't caused any loss of life or much structural damage. I hope that is the case. It's depressing enough to see what is still waiting to be rebuilt , without more buildings coming down..

Not a lot to report from this corner of the world. The weather eventually settled into summer after a long and unsettled spring. We have had some very hot days, but the countryside has remained remarkably green, due to the occasional very heavy rainfall.

DH and I have decided to go over to the UK .this (northern)summer. My sister and her husband look a lot older in recent photos , so we thought we should make the effort while they are reasonably fit and well. We have booked a cottage in the Cotswolds for a week in July. The Cotswolds are fairly central and very beautiful. We plan to holiday there with them, which should be pleasant and restful for both couples. We have other aging relatives in the area and some good friends ,so it should be a good week. Daughter #1 and her family will be in Scotland in July, so we will travel up there and have some time with them too.

Daughter #2 is facing big changes in her life this year, her eldest (20) has gone flatting for the first time (she has one more year to do at Uni.) the second child (18) is coming down to the South Island this week ,for his tertiary study, leaving her with the third child (16) at home , as an only child... He is quite looking forward to that and has already moved into his sister's(bigger and better)bedroom !!

The BB is very quiet , I wonder how much longer we will have access to it ? Thanks for sparking us into life again Rosey, its always good to hear your news.

Take care.
