No. Cal. travel advice
Good Monday to all. We are back from a (finally) relaxing time at Jax. Beach. I actually got the folding chair and umbrella and sat in the sand and went in the ocean Sat. and Sun. AM. First time in years that I've really been in the ocean. Very relaxing time, not too much sun, just enough.So--My birthday is the end of October and DH and I have been talking about a "Wine Country tour" for years. We have several friends who have been to different areas of No. Cal. Sanoma and Napa Valley to be exact. Looking for advice where to go, stay, what to avoid, etc. I'll eventually call AAA and plan a Tues. -Tues. type of trip. (providing all the medical checks ups are OK).
Any great fabric/quilt stores I can't live without visiting while in San. Fran? area? We were there over 25 years ago with another couple, but they did all the leg work.
Rosey-you and your dog are priceless!

Sara, this month's issue of Sunset magazine had a fairly in depth article on the Napa/Sonoma wine country, including the wines, tasting rooms, food, where to stay and where to play. I'll see if I can download it online, since I have a subscription.
Here is a link to an article on the SF area quilt shops: http://planetpatchwork.com/sfbay.htm As I recall, there is virtually nothing in the City proper in the way of quilt shops. You might Google the towns you expect to be in to check on some others.
I'll let you know if I can get the Sunset article and then I'll get your email addy.

Found it! Here's the link. http://www.sunset.com/travel/wine-country/napa-and-sonoma-face-off-00418000078101/
If you are simply looking for a good wine country tour (that also has a bunch of good quilt shops), you might check into the Oregon wine country. The area is MUCH more affordable, the weather is better, and the quilt shops are wonderful. We spent a week there earlier this summer.
Kathi (again)
Thanks for saying that Kathi, I didn't want to blow our own horn, but we do have wonderful vineyards, awesome places to stay and a multitude of QS's in winecountry. Also so close to the coast. And we have the Spruce Goose!! However you must like Pinot !! Jill

We tried any number of different wines (including the pinots). If you are looking for a LOT of tasting rooms within walking distance of each other, try going to Carlton! Good bakery and B&B's in the area, too.
There is the sweetest little quilt shop in Yamill, very close to Carlton. "the Quilted Hill" located in heaven. Not the biggest or fanciest but just delightful, one time we had to help them catch a loose horse!
two other quilt shops very close as well. This is the area where we have our guilds fall and spring retreat.
Sara -- if you are in SF and want to head "south" on the CalTrain, I'd be happy to show you around some of the quilt shops. My e-mail is sondra.horn@stanford.edu . There is a train stop in Palo Alto and trains run about every 30-60 minutes. It wouldn't be a long train ride. When are you planning to visit?
As for the Napa area. There's a wonderful trip on the Napa Wine Train. It can be pricey, depending on whether you have lunch, etc. But it's fun. We took my in-laws on a lunch trip and had a wonderful time.
Let me know if you want to "shop hop". I'd be happy to drive.
Sara -- I tried posting, but don't know what happened. I'll try again.
When are you planning to visit? I'd be happy to show you some of the nice shops we have in the "South Bay" area. There is a train that you can take right from SF and I could meet you at the Palo Alto station. They run every hour from 5A to Midnight. More trains during commute times. Just let me know. You can reach me at sondra.horn@stanford.edu and I'm happy to show you around.
As for the wine country area, there is always the Napa Wine Train. It's a little pricey, but a LOT of fun.
Hope you enjoy your visit to our fair city. Kathi is right, there aren't any REAL quilt shops in SF. But, I'd be happy to shop with you if you want. Just let me know.
Sondra
