Remember Gucci?

For those of you who remember the incredibly heart warming story of Mary and Charles Luney driving the rescued black Standard Poodle from Tulsa to Blaine, so we could pick her up there and bring her into Canada for her 'happily ever after', we have some very sad news. Gucci has been diagnosed with an oral squamous cell carcinoma and it does not look like it will be possible to remove it completely with surgery. No final treatment decisions have been made yet, but it does not look like this is going to end well. We are devastated.

Prayer and positive thoughts would be very much appreciated.

I am devastated. You both and Gucci will be in our prayers. I am so glad she was able to have as much happy life as she had with you.

Jean, cancer is happening all too often in many breeds of dogs. I'm sure that when you have all the information in that you need to make a decision, you will. It isn't easy. Having lost Ceilidh two years ago to hemangiosarcoma and having spent $3,000 in two days at our teaching hospital, OVC, in Guelph, I was grateful to have the means to do so but I also knew that her time with me was limited. As it was, I had five more weeks with her, precious weeks, but I'm not sure I could justify that kind of expense again in the end. It's a hard decision to make but enjoy the time you have with Gucci and before the suffering becomes great, you will make the right decision for her.

I guess dogs can get anything humans get. I've had 3 or more squamous skin cancers, face, arm, but they were where it was easy to remove. I don't know if vets have MOSE surgery, a type of skin cancer surgery that has some plastic surgery involved, but that's what my DH & I get when needed. And yes, it is very expensive. If it is in the mouth, or lips it may not be possible to get it all. Give your fur baby lots of love and attention, as I'm sure you will.

Every time I go through the agony of saying goodbye to a beloved dog I promise myself I'll never put myself though that again but I always do. Some of us are just helpless, hopeless animal lovers. Oh well, the research has demonstrated that those of us who give our hearts to a pet live longer than any other group of people. Hang in there, Jean, and I know you will make the right decision at the right time.

Jean, yes, I remember Gucci and am so sorry to hear of the sadness you are facing now. Those of us who have lost pets know just how you are feeling. Hugs.... You will know when the time is right but that won't make it any easier for you. Think back to the joy of her arrival and all of the fun you have had together since then.

Marion.

I'm so sorry Jean, we all love Gucci, and I have never have never even met him.
Since you got him though I have met a couple other standard poodles, and they are so cool & fun loving!
One is on my walk route, he's the neatest dog. I remember when she got him she though she'd made a mistake that he was too much for her and now they are a perfect match!
