Singer
Jane - You can call 1-800-4singer and they can tell you the date that the machine left the factory, right down to the actual day. There is also a website http://www.singerco.com/support/serial_numbers.html that lists all the years and places for the serial numbers (including those with no letters, one letter and two letters in them). Yours appears to have been made on June 23, 1931 in Elizabeth NJ.Kathi

The date given is the date that the lot of machines was commissioned to be built. It may have been built any time after that date, but not necessarily on that date. If you look further in the list you will see when the next batch of the same machine was commissioned, and so can determine that it was built some time between the two dates.
Oops. I thought you were looking at the www.singerco.com site. If you go there and look for your serial number, you can then look further along in the same series and see when the next batch of serial numbers was allocated for the next machines like yours. If you call Singer, be prepared to be given incorrect information. Singer employees are not familiar with their older sewing machines. They are working with photocopies of old faintly handwritten entries of serial numbers.
