. . . It I stand on my head, and whistle Dixie. . .

Then I can post here.  I have been reading everyone else's posts and keeping up.
Have been sick with IBS (read tummy) over the past few weeks.  Thurs. was so bad I couldn't stand it any more, had DH take me to doctor.  She sent me to ER for IV saline drip, as I was so dehydrated.  Referral to Gastro. specialist, who I will call first thing tomorrow for an appt.  The dehydtation thing is very serious, I didn't know if the electrolytes got so off, and the potassium too low it can cause a heart attack.  So, that isn't anything I want to happen!
The storm "Sandy" my DH constantly watching the CNN and FOX news, the election, combined with my Mom's age related problems lead me to major anxiety, and that didn't help the IBS either.  Generally, I'm a mess.
But at least I still have my sense of humor.  While lying in the ER getting the IV I started singing to DH--to the tune of the Beach Boys "Good Vibrations"  --I'm talking about dehydration, it's giving me excitation, D,D, D, Dehydration.  Sometimes you just gotta laugh.
Missed the quilt guild meeting.  I hated to, as so many members went to Houston.

Sara, IBS or spastic bowel is awful. I suffered from it many years ago and knew where all the bathrooms were pretty much in the terminals we flew from at the time. It's scary stuff to end up in the hospital dehydrated and it can be serious. My last bout ended up with such a bad case of nerves that I wondered I would survive and I had two small children at the time. It was brought on by stress. I'm glad you got 'hooked up' now take it easy what you put into your tummy. I used to eat a lot of white rice (as it was more digestable) and baked chicken breasts, skin removed before cooking. Then I would put both in the blender with a little water added and made a porridge out of it. Plop a dollop of butter in the centre and it makes a soothing snack and sits well in the tummy when it's inflamed. You might also try some probiotics although they've never done me a whole lot of good.

Thanks Rosey-Never thought of the white rice trick. For 10-15 years I've been doing brown rice, apples with skin, etc. for fiber. Time go go to the white rice, applesauce way. Called this morning for an appt. with the Gastro. Dr. group. There is too long a wait for the #1 person I wanted, so will have another doc. on 1 week from tomorrow, the 13th, close by the house. "Stress" is a terrible thing, I'm not turning on the TV for a few days, I don't have to invite in more than I can handle.

Sara - Ouch. I'm so sorry your IBS attack landed you in hospital. My IBS hasn't gotten that bad, but then I've never had the stress levels you are facing right now.
I like your approach of singing in the ER. I always say that laughing sure beats crying.

I only got that dehydrated once, from some sort of food poisoning/salmonella that caused a terrible case of Montezuma's Revenge, and required two units of IV fluids. The feeling of freezing to death from being that dehydrated is one I doubt I'll ever forget.

Rosey is right, white rice is good, along with plain baked or boiled chicken. Ironically, this is what the veterinarian suggests when our dog has diarrhea.
Clear liquids, like Sprite, 7-Up, Sierra Mist (made with real sugar and ~not~ high fructose corn syrup) cut to 50% strength with water are generally safe, too.

Bee - my IBS acts up from time to time, but is not severe compared to how most other people suffer from it.
By paying attenion, I have learned which trigger foods and beverages to avoid (or use in moderation) and to back off from those foods & beverages(e.g., coffee) when symptoms present themselves. This same approach works well with my acid reflux, since any type antacid is useless (for me).
As a result, my diet is not very exciting. LOL
There is a lot of good information on the Internet, too.

Bee etc. This is a topic unfortunately close to my heart...I had a recurrance several years ago with IBS when I had food poisoning and it took me three years at least to get my insides settled down where they weren't jumping all over the place with inflammation. I took a product called Revitalex, which helps with IBS. There are nutrients in it, amino accids, all-glutamin, etc. which helped repair the intestinal lining. You need to look at your diet, as Doris said, to see if you can figure out what is triggering it. If you have a naturopath in your area, if you have a health food store you can access, all of that would be helpful. Allopathic or mainstream medicine has never helped me with IBS, rather, it's hindered it. I see a homeopath now when I have an issue such as that. A naturopath is good as well. Looking at your diet, figuring out what is triggering it, and as Doris says, it's hit and miss and what will bother you one day, might not another. I lost so much weight when my first husband died (I was 34)that I went down under a hundred pounds and it was scary. When I think of the 'porridge' of chicken and rice that I made up in the blender (cuisenart would do), I found it very comforting and easy on my digestive system. That was when I could eat butter. Now thanks to Jean Hamilton, who introduced me to Earth Balance, a butter substitute, I use that. You might also look at the gluten in your diet and go gluten free for awhile, elminate dairy for awhile. But it's very helpful to see a naturopath in trying to deal with IBS.

Thank you so much ladies. My main problem is when I go out anywhere, I get in such a tizzy I have to take a pill to keep me out of the loo and sometimes it doesn't work. I will check my homeopath next time I go out and see what she can suggest. Hugs Bee.

Me too. I was diagnosed with small intestine bacterial overgrowth for which I continue take a probiotic daily. They also caught extremely low levels of Vitamin D at the same time. The not knowing for certain what the triggers will be each time drives me crazy. But it did become manageable. Just lately the anxious feeling in the gut has returned and I need to get that checked out to hopefully avoid return of the worst symptoms. I just wish there was more certainty with the diagnosing and help.
