kitchen remodel

The kitchen make-over is in full swing.  Cabinets, sink, and appliances were removed last week by Habitat For Humanity.    They do this for free(!) and I donate these items to their local ReStore.  They price the items and sell, to raise funds for the H for H  projects.

The soffits were removed this week, and all the lighting fixtures are being redone.   We found a few surprises in the soffits --- a sewer gas vent pipe as well as a natural gas line that goes to the upstairs furnace.  All those were adjusted so that we can have walls going directly to the ceiling.

For energy efficiency, I am having  recessed LED flood lights installed in the ceiling.  It should be very nice.

I will try to post some pics.  Well, I have no idea why they won't sort any better, but here they are.

That is great to know that they will remove your old stuff for free when you donate it. That could knock the cost of a remodel project down quite a bit. We just remodeled and they charged a fortune in our bid just for the removal of the bathroom items. I thought when they were doing it how much we could have saved by removing it yourself. It only took 1/2 hour to remove all items from our bathroom and I can not remember the price but it was a lot. Good luck with remodeling.

Goodness, Doris, this does NOT look like fun. Are you doing take out for a treat? This is a major overhaul.

And yes, Annie LOVES the snow. She and Meg are delightful although if Annie was a child she would be on Ritalin by now...(smile).

Doris...What a HUGE job ! Can't imagine how you find time to "post" with a kitchen in that state ! I'm sure you will be thrilled with the finished product. Please post photos when it is all done. We should be doing the same thing here but have decided to leaave it to the "next people " whoever and whenever that will be ...!!

Rosey - We are not eating out any more than normal, and won't until we get tired of "camping out" with our gas grill, toaster oven, crock pot,and microwave. Restaurants are expensive, and so is the new kitchen. Ugh.

DH and I sit down and plan our meals for the week. Our DDIL brought us chicken tortilla soup on Sunday night (bless her!) that was wonderful, and I had enough for lunch the next day.

Marion - I was inclined to leave this kitchen "as is" but the built-in microwave is part of a combination unit. It died after 26 years, even though the oven below it was still working (but showing its age). The dead microwave was the domino that started the chain of events.

DH has always hated the soffits. Having them removed will open up the space visually. This also gives me another shelf for storage. In addition, we're getting a slightly larger oven (30") that will fit two 9 x 13 pans on one shelf, side-by-side. And it has convection. New cooktop and dishwasher also. :-)

Many of our decisions are for resale in around ten years, when we might down-size.
